Could you skipper a classic Brixham sailing trawler? Vigilance of Brixham, an original Brixham sailing trawler and part of the UK Heritage Fleet, is looking for skippers and mates following a £1.5m restoration project. The boat returns to service in 2026 taking locals and visitors on half day tours along the coast of the English Riviera.

Rob Murray, Chair of the Board of Trustees, says “We are increasing our pool of skippers and mates so we can offer more sailings to satisfy the demand. We are embarking on an ambitious plan of sailings and we anticipate a huge demand as we know many people will want to see the boat after all the work that has gone. We also know there is going to be many people who want to sail on Vigilance of Brixham in 2026, her centenary year.”

Skippers must hold a Yachtmaster certificate with commercial endorsement and mates need a Yachtmaster certificate or day skipper qualification. Alternatively potential mates with a lot of experience of traditional vessels would be considered. Training will be given to ensure skippers and crews and able and confident to take Vigilance to sea with fare paying passengers. Vigilance of Brixham is based on the Heritage Pontoon in Brixham Harbour. These are volunteer positions and do not attract payment.

Description: A detailed pen sketch captures a majestic sailboat ‘Vigilance’ with its sails fully extended over the water. The vessel seems caught in motion, with waves depicted around it.

Vigilance is a Brixham Trawler built at Upham’s Yard in Brixham in 1926 – she was the last one ever built. Having had a complete restoration, ready for her centenary, you can have an experience you will never forget by coming sailing on her in Torbay.

Vigilance is owned and run by a friendly team of volunteers. They are looking for more people to join our passionate team. They currently have opportunities for maintenance and restoration people, skippers, crew and back office.

The post 2025 Heritage Rally has been cancelled first appeared on Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta.

Well, if so, the Brixham Heritage Sailing Rally is the ideal gathering, taking place on Saturday September 6th.

Essentially, this is an organised Sail-in-Company in beautiful Torbay with informal social activity centred around the welcoming embrace of Brixham Yacht Club.

No prizes, presentations; just an opportunity to sail and mingle with like-minded folk before the end of Autumn.
